Steel Window Repair by Heritage Steel Window Repair
Most steel windows that stick, leak or rattle do not need to be replaced. The frames are rolled steel and were built to last a century; what fails is the paint, the putty, the hinges and the seals. We repair those parts in place so the window works again and keeps its original look.
Our crew works on rowhouses, twins, apartment buildings and commercial buildings across Philadelphia and the nearby suburbs. We bring the tools to straighten bars, free seized vents and replace glass on site, and we take sashes to our Port Richmond shop when they need bench work.
Common Steel Window Problems We Fix
A sash that will not close is usually a seized hinge or a frame bowed by rust building up behind it. We clean the hinge knuckles, replace worn pins and, where rust has pushed the frame out of line, cut the rust out and realign the steel.
Cracked glass, loose putty and drafts are the next most common calls. Old putty dries out and lets water sit against the steel, which is where rust starts. We remove failed glazing, treat the rabbet, prime it and reglaze with a putty made for steel.

What a Repair Visit Includes

Repair or Replace?
We tell you honestly when a window is past repair. That is rare. Replacement steel windows of similar quality cost several times more than restoring the ones you have, and the narrow sightlines of the original frames are hard to match with aluminum or vinyl.
If a frame has lost too much metal, we can often weld in a new section rather than replacing the whole unit. You get a written scope with options before any work starts.
How Long a Repair Lasts
A repaired steel window that is kept painted will last decades. We recommend a quick check every few years: look for cracked putty, peeling paint at the bottom rail and hinges that are getting stiff. Catching those early keeps the next repair small.
We serve Philadelphia, the Main Line, Bucks, Chester and Delaware Counties, South Jersey and Wilmington. Related services: window repair, steel window restoration, window restoration.
How Much Does Steel Window Repair Cost in Philadelphia?
Price depends on what the window needs, not on a flat per-window rate. As a rough guide: adjusting and freeing a stuck vent with new hinge pins is the smallest job; reglazing a sash with new putty and paint costs more; welding in new steel or straightening bent bars is at the top of the repair range. Published averages for general window repair in Philadelphia sit around $460 per window, with a wide spread between simple and complex work.
Full restoration of every window in a house is priced window by window after a survey. It still usually costs well under new custom steel windows of the same quality, which is why we recommend repair first. Your written estimate lists each window, what it needs and its price.
Permits, Historic Districts and Egress
Like-for-like repair of existing windows generally does not need a building permit, but check with Philadelphia Licenses and Inspections if you are unsure. Properties on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places need Historical Commission review for exterior changes; repair in kind is usually the simplest path, and we provide photos and scopes for your application.
Bedroom windows may also be the required emergency exit. When we repair casements in bedrooms we make sure they open fully and that the hardware works from inside without tools.
Our approach follows the National Park Service guidance on historic steel windows (Preservation Brief 13), which recommends repairing steel windows rather than replacing them whenever the frames are sound.
