Steel Window Restoration by Heritage Steel Window Repair
Restoration is the complete version of repair. Each sash is stripped to bare metal, rust is removed, damaged sections are repaired or replaced, and the window is primed, painted and reglazed. When we finish, the window opens, closes and seals the way it did when it was new.
Restoring original steel windows keeps the slim profiles and multi-lite pattern that give older buildings their character. It also uses far less new material than tearing the windows out and replacing them.
Our Restoration Process
We start with a survey of every window, noting broken glass, missing hardware, rust damage and whether each vent operates. You get a written scope with a price per window, so you can restore everything at once or in phases.
Sashes that need bench work come back to our shop. Fixed frames are restored in place. Openings are protected and secured each day, and in occupied homes we work room by room.

What Restoration Includes

Energy Performance
Restored steel windows are tighter than most people expect. New weatherstripping stops the drafts, and where efficiency matters we can glaze with laminated or low-E glass or add interior storm panels that are nearly invisible.
Masonry Around the Windows
Steel windows set in brick and stone often have cracked sills, rusted lintels or failed mortar around the frame. Our crew handles that masonry work as part of the same project, so the window and the wall are sealed together.
We serve Philadelphia, the Main Line, Bucks, Chester and Delaware Counties, South Jersey and Wilmington. Related services: window restoration, historic window restoration, historic preservation.
Restoration Cost and Value
Restoration costs more per window than a simple repair because every sash is stripped, derusted, primed, painted and reglazed. It is still usually a fraction of the price of new custom steel windows, and the original frames will last decades more once they are kept painted.
We price restoration window by window after a survey, so you can restore the most visible elevation first and do the rest later.

Steel Window Restoration FAQ
A typical house with 15 to 25 windows takes two to four weeks, depending on how many sashes need shop work.
In most cases, yes. Comparable new steel windows cost several times more than restoration, and they take months to fabricate.
Some frames can accept thin insulated glass. Where they cannot, laminated or low-E glass and interior storms improve comfort without changing the look.
