Window Hardware by Heritage Steel Window Repair
Plenty of windows that seem broken only need new hardware. A stripped operator gear, a broken latch or a missing stay is enough to put a good window out of use. We repair and replace hardware on steel, bronze and wood windows.
Where original hardware can be saved, we strip, clean and reinstall it. Where it cannot, we source matching reproduction pieces.
Original Hardware
Old cast hardware is often better made than new. We remove layers of paint, free seized parts, replace springs and screws, and refinish the pieces in their original finish.
Missing pieces are matched from salvage or reproduction lines so every window in the room matches.

Hardware We Service

Child Safety Devices
On upper floors we can install window opening control devices that limit how far a window opens but still release for emergency exit.
Small Jobs Welcome
Hardware work is often a short visit. We are happy to replace a few operators or locks; it does not have to be part of a large project.
We serve Philadelphia, the Main Line, Bucks, Chester and Delaware Counties, South Jersey and Wilmington. Related services: storm windows, rust removal, media blasting.
Finding Parts for Older Windows
The hardest part of window hardware work is often finding the right piece. Old steel casement operators, cam handles and sash locks were made by many manufacturers, and some patterns have not been produced for decades.
We keep a stock of salvaged hardware from windows we have removed over the years, and we work with reproduction suppliers who still make period patterns. When neither has the part, we can often repair the original by replacing a worn gear, spring or pin.
Bring us a photo or the part itself and we will tell you quickly whether we can match it. Matching hardware makes a room look finished, and working hardware is what keeps a window in daily use.
Upgrades are possible too: keyed locks for ground-floor windows, opening control devices for children's rooms, and new screens with matching clips. All of it can usually be fitted in a single short visit.
Good to Know
Hardware is the part of a window you touch every day, so small problems are noticed quickly: a crank that slips, a lock that no longer reaches its keeper, a lift that has come loose. Fixing these early prevents bigger damage, because a window forced open or shut with broken hardware bends its frame and cracks glass. A hardware check is included free whenever we visit for other window work.
